Close To The Edge
Song Lyrics
I’m standing close to the edge
And I witnessed all those things you said
I’ve tried not to let them in
But here I’m standing close to the edge
How was I supposed to know
Not to hate but to care
A distant dream that I forgot
Could have served me so well
So so well
Can’t you see that it’s not my fault
It’s just the way I’ve been brought up
Another person I can blame
Another way to hide my pain
Do you think
That ordinary people
With ordinary problems
Don’t suffer
Well I’m begging you
To hold your lips tight
There’s all of these people
Close to the edge
Be not forgotten
All who have fallen
All who have fallen
All who have fallen
Have fallen, have fallen
All who have fallen
Have fallen, have fallen
I wrote Close To The Edge two weeks before one of the most devastating moments of my life.
I heard someone screaming out one evening from across the road where I was living at the time. Another neighbor and I went over to see if she was ok. Through her back fence, she said ‘My son’s killed himself’.
Shocked, we ran through the house and into the backyard to see a mother with her lifeless teenage son in her arms.
I still remember the look on the father’s face as he arrived home, then the grandparents – the look of absolute helplessness… such a sad sad night.
