Imagine for a moment that you have been training for a single event your entire life. You’ve prepared for it, you’ve accepted it, and you’ve built your identity around it. But that event isn’t a marathon or a championship. It’s when your life will end.
My guest today, Erin Mark, was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a life-threatening genetic condition. As a child, she was a Make-A-Wish kid who was told she wouldn’t live past the age of eighteen.
For years, Erin has lived on borrowed time. But when she hit her thirties and entered end-stage lung failure, she decided she wasn’t done writing her story just yet. And thanks to modern medicine, Erin is still with us today. She is now a Keynote Speaker who teaches organizations how to thrive through uncertainty.
In this episode, we go deep into the difference between ‘grit’ and true adaptability. We break down how to advocate for yourself when the experts have given up on you, and we talk about how to stop waiting for certainty and start focusing on what truly matters.
This is a powerful conversation about defying the odds and rewriting your story.
“I changed the name on the label on my phone alarm clock to four words: You woke up today. So it was a reminder, if I got another 24 hours, I was gonna make them count.” – Erin Mark

About Erin
Erin Mark is a keynote speaker who helps organizations navigate change, uncertainty, and high-pressure environments where teams are increasingly asked to do more with less. Her work focuses on building resilience, self-advocacy, and adaptability so people can move forward without running themselves into the ground.
Her perspective is shaped by a lifetime of living with a fatal illness, including time spent facing end-of-life, where lessons about urgency, clarity, and what truly matters became impossible to ignore.
Having lived inside constraint – physically, emotionally, and professionally, Erin challenges the belief that resilience is just grit and determination. She teaches that grit alone is often what leads to burnout. Instead, her approach blends mindset, practical tools, and compassionate leadership to help people respond to change and difficult circumstances without running themselves into the ground.
Erin’s work empowers leaders and teams to make clearer decisions under pressure, adapt in uncertain conditions, and rise above obstacles with intention.
When she’s not on stage, Erin is usually with her husband, Ryan, chasing their goal of visiting every MLB ballpark, or showing up on your screen on the Game Show Network or Hulu as a Press Your Luck contestant, frantically trying to avoid the Whammies.
